  1.   Broadway  is  a  strong  font.    Commonly  used  as  headlines and
  2.   announcement text.  Bold in its  style, but  also delicate  in it's
  3.   lines.  A happy blend of styles.

  5.   Sometimes called  'Madison' this  font has  been used  by the Atari
  6.   systems for sometime in GDOS format.  Now finished for  the outline
  7.   format of  Calamus.   To best utilize the printing ability of a 300
  8.   dpi laser printer the  font's thin  lines have  been increased 50%.
  9.   This  allows  for  the  printing  of characters without any loss of
  10.   integrity down to 9 point for  the  standard  style.    Due  to the
  11.   embellished style  of the  Engraved Broadway font this increases to
  12.   21 points for the  medium  and  expanded,  and  24  points  for the
  13.   condensed fonts.   Of  course they  appear splendid at higher point
  14.   sizes.

  16.   The standard style contains  all numbers,  punctuation, capital and
  17.   lower case  letters.   Also included  are the accentuated alphabet,
  18.   pound, yen and other assorted accent marks.  The engraved fonts are
  19.   upper case  and numbers.   Of  course included  are the punctuation
  20.   marks.  The common usage of this font is to either begin words with
  21.   the  normal  lower  case  letterset following or complete uppercase
  22.   headlines.

  24.   Certain characters  are not  common in  the standard  typeset, so a
  25.   'best and  can determine'  set was  designed to  fill the set while
  26.   staying faithful to the intent of the font style.  Optimization was
  27.   kept close because of the font's broad style.  While little kerning
  28.   is  needed,  some  pairs  may  need  to  be  examined  for greatest
  29.   consideration.

  37.         A quick note on the careful creation of this font.
  38.  
  39.   Each letter was carefully roughed in and then printed out  on an HP
  40.   Laserjet II at 300 dpi.  While one letter was being checked out for
  41.   finishing, the next letter  was in  a stage  of being  created.  In
  42.   this way all the characters were created and polished.  This caused
  43.   a printing out of over 60+ pages, of  the fonts  in various stages.
  44.   They were  also printed out in various sizes to check on the effect
  45.   of line thickness and useability.

  47.   Some of the letters were flipped  or  turned  but  most  had  to be
  48.   created from  scratch.   Broadway Engraved was created secondly but
  49.   it is a true separate font.  Only a couple of the letters are close
  50.   enough to  have been  copied between them and adjusted.  Due to the
  51.   way the  engraved line  is inserted  into the  character, each took
  52.   some time  to develop.   Each of the characters was then kerned and
  53.   adjusted for the desired set.

  55.   Because of the way Calamus can size the letters in a font,  I found
  56.   that the  best way  I could  adjust the  fonts for  new uses was to
  57.   condense or extend the sets.  This especially allows for  the fonts
  58.   to work out for headlines and sub-titles.  Now without having to be
  59.   tied to a larger or smaller  size than  would be  best utilized you
  60.   can  have  more  text  on  each  line  or  space it out and use the
  61.   extended size.
